How to Measure Fuel in a Motorcycle Gas Tank Without a Gauge

Check the Fuel Gauge Display

If you suspect an issue with your motorcycle's fuel gauge, thoroughly inspect the display. Look for any damage, dirt, or debris that could interfere with its accuracy.

If the display appears normal, try resetting the gauge by turning the ignition key to the "On" position and then back to the "Off" position. This may reset the gauge and restore its functionality.

Measure the Fuel Level Manually

If the fuel gauge is not working, you can manually measure the fuel level in the tank using a dipstick or a clear plastic tube.

To use a dipstick:

• Locate the dipstick tube on the side of the fuel tank.
• Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean.
• Insert the dipstick back into the tube until it touches the bottom of the tank.
• Remove the dipstick again and measure the wet portion against the markings on the dipstick to determine the fuel level.

To use a clear plastic tube:

• Cut a length of clear plastic tube long enough to reach from the top of the fuel tank to the bottom.
• Insert one end of the tube into the fuel tank and the other end into a container.
• Open the fuel valve and allow fuel to flow into the tube.
• Close the fuel valve once the fuel reaches the top of the tank.
• Measure the height of the fuel in the tube to determine the fuel level.

Estimate the Fuel Level

If you do not have a dipstick or a clear plastic tube, you can estimate the fuel level by riding the motorcycle until it starts to run out of fuel. Note how far you have ridden since you last filled up the tank, and use this information to estimate the remaining fuel level.
