Sir Keir Starmer: Labour veteran poised to become UK's first Labour PM since 2010

Sir Keir Rodney Starmer KCB KC (born 2 September 1962) is a British politician and barrister who has served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since 16 January 2022.

Starmer is a centrist human rights lawyer with working-class roots. He was born in London to a toolmaker and a nurse. He was educated at Reigate Grammar School, the University of Leeds, and the London School of Economics.

After graduating, Starmer worked as a lawyer in London and Brussels. In 1990, he became a member of the Labour Party. He was elected to the House of Commons in 2015 and served in the Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn.

In 2020, Starmer was elected leader of the Labour Party. He is the first Labour leader to win a UK general election since 2010.
