The Flag of Yemen: A Symbol of Unity and National Pride
History of Yemen's Flag
The flag of the Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen in the South adopted the Arab Liberation Flag of 1952, featuring a sky-blue chevron with a red star. In contrast, the national flag of North Yemen patterned the Arab Liberation Flag used by the United Arab Republic, consisting of a horizontal tricolor of red-white-black.
Unification and the Current Flag
Upon the unification of North and South Yemen on May 22, 1990, a new flag was adopted. The current flag is a horizontal tricolor featuring equal bands of red, white, and black, representing the Pan-Arab colors.
Symbolism and Colors
The red band symbolizes the blood of martyrs who fought for Yemen's independence. The white band represents peace, while the black band represents the darkness of the pre-independence era. The Pan-Arab colors signify Yemen's membership in the Arab world.
South Yemen's Former Flag
Before unification, South Yemen's flag differed from the current flag. It featured a blue triangle and a red five-pointed star on the left side of the flag. This design reflected the country's affiliation with the Soviet Union and other socialist states.
