FC Twente take big step towards Women's Champions League after thrashing Benfica

FC Twente have taken a big step towards qualifying for the Women's Champions League after thrashing Benfica 5-0 in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie on Thursday.

The Dutch side were dominant from the start and took the lead in the 12th minute through Renate Jansen.

Jansen doubled her tally in the 25th minute before Fenna Kalma made it 3-0 just before the break.

FC Twente continued to create chances in the second half and added two more goals through Lynn Wilms and Marisa Olislagers.

The second leg will be played in Enschede on Wednesday, August 31.

The Dutch side have never reached the group stage of the Champions League before, but they are now just one game away from achieving that goal.

FC Twente will be confident of finishing the job in the second leg and booking their place in the group stage.

Benfica face uphill task in second leg

Benfica face a huge task to turn the tie around in the second leg.

The Portuguese side will need to score at least five goals without conceding in order to progress.

That seems like an almost impossible task, and it is hard to see Benfica overcoming the deficit.
